How does “home” take shape in your head? In your heart? When you think of home, what do you imagine? Take a second, and think about the feelings that rise up when you think about the concept of “home.” When you think of “home,” of the shape of it, is it a place? A person? A memory? When you view other people at “home,” what do you see?
These questions tangle in the personal and political today. Affordable housing, homelessness, immigrants and refugees, occupation and genocide in Palestine — people in our communities and beyond are coming face to face with the struggle for a home. THE SHAPE OF HOME seeks to confront, illuminate and remind our local community of the many aspects of home, whether through land, structure or community.
In the Farmhouse Cooperative House in South Berkeley, we want art lovers to be immersed in the SHAPE OF HOME. The Farmhouse is an 1890s Victorian gem that has been through various stages of co-housing since the 1960s, currently housing 19 folx. We want to showcase THE SHAPE OF HOME in all its permutations, and we invite you to come and live for awhile with us. Explore THE SHAPE OF HOME with all of our artists, and help a wonderful cause to give shape to a home for others.
All of the art in SHAPE OF HOME will be sold as donations to ARTogether in Oakland, California, which helps provide resources, connection and community through art to immigrants and refugees in the East Bay.
