Freespace Pop-Up Community Center
Freespace is a pop-up community center focused on hacking the civic experience. It is hosted in a 14,000 sqft warehouse in S0Ma, San Francisco, envisioned and implemented entirely by you.
Freespace was originally just a one month project, but it was extended to two months thanks to successful Indiegogo campaign. They’re now open periodically (check their schedule). They host a wide array of events and projects like classes, music, art, silent discos, yoga, a free bikeshare, community engagement and field trips, and more than a few silly costumes.
The folks at Freespace believe that we’ve come to rely heavily on words as our main source of communication; that words have become our crutch.
They’d like to strip you of that medium and have a silent party where you connect with others through your interactions, visual exchanges and a sensing of each others energies. And if that’s too hippy dippy for you, just think of it as a caveman party-ish, a time when people didn’t have language.
Please note, this is a social experiment, not a caveman dress-up party… but maybe you could make it into one if you dress up.
