The summer solstice isn’t rare. Neither is a full moon. But when they both fall on the same day it’s actually nearly a once-in-a-lifetime event – an event we haven’t seen in 70 years (or 40 years if you believe the Farmer’s Almanac – taking place in 1967 ushering in the Summer of Love). Either way, it’s not something that happens often.

Though the moon itself may not be tinged red tonight (that has more to do with cloud cover and city lights) the “Strawberry Moon” is so named because Algonquin tribes used the solstice as a signal for when fruits were finally ready for picking.
