Free Classic Movie Night at The Magick Lantern | East Bay

The Magick Lantern is a small movie theater is the cute little town of Point Richmond in the East Bay. They show many independent new movies, as well as some vintage picks hand-chosen by its proprietor.

Thursday is Classics Night when they show quirky old movies with no admission charge at all.

Sleep, my Love (1948, 97 min.)
New York architect Richard Courtland (Don Ameche) seems to have it all–a beautiful 5th Avenue townhouse, a prestigious job and a wealthy wife, Alison (Claudette Colbert) who adores him. The only problem is that Alison has an odd habit of sleepwalking and doing strange things while asleep–including pulling out a handgun and shooting her husband. So distraught is Richard about Alison’s condition that he’s seriously considering having her committed to an asylum. But when family friend Bob Cummings comes for a visit, he quickly senses that something is wrong with this scenario and that Richard isn’t telling all he knows.

Despite a plot that teeters on the impossible, Sleep, My Love succeeds due to committed performances from the entire cast (including sexy Hazel Brooks as the ultimate femme fatale) and taut direction by Douglas Sirk, noted for his glossy romantic melodramas (Magnificent Obsession, Written on the Wind), but who shows here that he’s equally adroit with film noir.
