Event Details

In collaboration with Write Now! SF Bay, a project to support writing and art by people of color, the Imaginists’ Guest House is presenting an afternoon of live prose and poetry readings and visual art created by leading Bay Area creatives of color, including six contributors to Write Now! SF Bay’s 5th anthology Uncommon Ground: BIPOC Journeys to Creative Activism.

The afternoon will include live prose and poetry readings and visual art slides by Uncommon Ground contributors Avotcja, Lorraine Bonner, Charles Dixon, C.K. Itamura, Shizue Seigel, and Kimi Sugioka. The event also includes live readings by Sonoma County writers Ernesto Garay and Nicole Zimmerman, and live music performed by internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Sachiko Kanenobu.

“Many writers and artists of color are deeply familiar with adversity and change. Our DNA is suffused with profound lessons on how to cope with challenging times. And our writing is linked with daily activism in large and small ways.” Shizue Seigel, Editor

Contributors drew from roots in Native America, Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Muslim world. They wrote from lived experience as teachers, journalists, poets, muralists, physicians, culture bearers, and survivors of poverty, cancer, sexual abuse, and multi-generational trauma. The breadth and depth of their experience brings authenticity and humanity to issues of equity and engagement. They create not just for themselves but to inspire others.
