In the summer of 2023, Mayor London Breed and Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin announced $4 million in funding for the Powell Street Improvement Project. The City asked the Union Square Alliance to lead the initial design phases of the project.

The Alliance has been working since early this year with a design team including Field Operations, renowned as the team behind the groundbreaking High Line in New York City and locally known for designing the award-winning Tunnel Tops park in the Presidio, and Site Lab Urban Studio, responsible for several transformational local projects including the proposed mixed-use reimagination of Stonestown Mall and the Pier 70 waterfront redevelopment.

The goal of this project is to work with property owners and businesses, other community stakeholders, and the City to produce a beautiful, durable, and cost-effective design that will help restore Powell Street to the iconic status it deserves.

Over the following months, we intend to move forward with the City to begin construction on a first phase of this vision that is achievable with the $4 million budget.

Union Square Alliance invites the public to dream big with us about the future of Powell Street!

Join us for an Open House to unveil design proposals for Powell Street on Wednesday, June 12th between 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. (come any time) at 111 Powell Street.
