Here’s a great free weekend hike idea from SFGATE’s Andrew Chamings, perfect for an almost spring day.

Beyond its reputation for nude bathing, the postcard view and its seclusion, the cove at Marshall’s Beach is known for its ancient gray-green serpentinite rock structures, named literally for their snake-skin appearance.

SFGATE editor Andrew Chamings found himself on this public stretch of San Francisco sand, taking in maybe the best view of the most photographed (and most gorgeous) human-made structure on Earth — the Golden Gate Bridge — and he was the only person on the entire beach.

More striking than the views, the rocks, is this solitude, Chamings writes. Find your way to this secluded beach this weekend for your own little slice of privacy in the big city.

Getting There:
Marshall’s Beach is open 24/7. The only access is via Batteries to Bluffs Trail on foot.
