Event Details

1951 Coffee Company host a free celebration for World Refugee Day on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, 6 – 9 p.m. at its Berkeley café (2410 Channing Way). Community members are invited to explore what it means to be a refugee and learn about the challenges within the resettlement process.

The evening will pay respect to various cultures and perspectives on the idea of “home” through art expression, activities and refreshments provided by those who have joined the Bay Area community through the refugee program. Admission to 1951’s World Refugee Day event comes at no cost, asking only that guests define the value of your ticket through the donation option.

1951 Coffee’s Refugee Resettlement Experience, where after receiving a new identity at random, they will navigate through social services, housing, education, employment in order to rebuild a life in a foreign place. The evening will also feature an Eritrean coffee making ceremony, a mehendi (henna) station, an assortment of authentic Indian chai courtesy of Tipu Chai, and Syrian treats provided by Old Damascus Fare within the Cultural Courtyard. The open house celebration will debut Our Journey, a photo and quote exhibit curated by 1951 Coffee baristas that captures honest insights of refugee lives and resettlement in the United States.
