Event Details

These guys dig up rare or forgotten movies, often shorts and share them with audiences in their cozy screening room.

This time, guest curator Nate Mahoney and Oddball Films present: “1969: A Very Good Year, an evening of fascinating films from a remarkable time in history. This was the year that Astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon, the dawn of the computer age, the year Lyndon B. Johnson was succeeded by Richard Nixon as President and the groundbreaking TV show Monty Python made its debut and coined the phrase, “And now for something completely different.” Which applies to this OddBall screening comprised of sex, drugs, art and advertising to represent 1969.

NOW SHOWING:

  • “Groovin’” (1969), an odd documentary with interviews about teens and their ideas about drug use
  • “NFL Game of the Week 49ers vs. Colts” (1969), vintage sports footage of a historic American football match with the home team
  • “The Best in the West 1969: Western Region Creative Awards” (1969), provides insight into Mad Men style with award winning ads from a most important year including commentary by the ad execs themselves
  • “Gay San Francisco” (1969), is complete with full nudity and odd interviews, this film is a racy and stylized view of queer SF in the late 60’s
  • “Bonnie Hubbard and Philadelphia Cream Cheese Commercials” (1969), provides a glimpse into out of date promotions from 1969, one for a grocery store and multiple versions for Philadelphia Cream Cheese
  • “The Impact of Peter Max” (1972), jumps a few years after 1969 for the artist biopic of mega pop artist Peter Max (whose signatures were nearly as big as his paintings).

JUST SO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT WAS: Most of these films are quite scarce, despite scads of accolades and international awards.
