Free Museum & Gallery Crawl: Yerba Buena Third Thursdays | SoMa

Yerba Buena Third Thursdays is a monthly outing of art, performance, music, and drinks in the Yerba Buena neighborhood in the heart of downtown San Francisco, between 2nd and 5th Street, and Market and Harrison Street.

Free, but an RSVP is recommended to save time at check-in. Pre-register, and use your smart phone or printed ticket to get wristbands at participating art venues.

Yerba Buena neighborhood galleries, museums, restaurants, and bars will host an event every third Thursday of the month which will be an exciting chance to explore the Yerba Buena district.

Look for the yellow balloons for Third Thursday events, and be sure to pick up your wrist band at YBCA for special rates at participating bars and restaurants. All gallery and museum admissions will be free, except for the Contemporary Jewish Museum which will offer a special entry price of $5.

1) California Historical Society | 678 Mission Street

Free tours of the Juana Briones y su California exhibition, 5-8 pm | FREE | Enjoy free tours of the Juana Briones y su California exhibition with CHS’s Guest Concierges. In this bilingual exhibition about the life and times of Juana Briones (1802–1889)—pioneer, founder, healer— experience the transformation of California under three flags: Spain, Mexico, and the United States. Navigate alongside Juana through the social, economic, political, and legal upheavals of nineteenth-century California. Through paintings, maps, portraits, legal documents, and artifacts, realize a vision of Juana Briones as a woman adaptable yet undaunted in her pursuits.

2) Cartoon Art Museum | 655 Mission @ 3rd

Happy Birthday, Edward Gorey, 5-8 pm | FREE | Celebrate the late Edward Gorey’s 89th birthday with dramatic readings from Gorey’s works led by longtime collaborator Carol Verburg. Look into your future with a prophetic Fantods reading by Paige Z. Costumes are welcome, but are not required. Doors open at 5 pm; festivities including wine, tea, cookies and entertainment begin at 6 pm.

3) Contemporary Jewish Museum | 736 Mission St @ Yerba Buena Lane

WriterCorps Live at The CJM, 6-7:30 pm | $5 after 5 pm | WritersCorps youth and teaching artists share the stage with Zimbabwean author NoViolet Bulawayo for an evening of multi-generational readings and literary performances. WritersCorps is an award-winning program that places professional writers in community settings to teach creative writing to youth.

4) Museum of the African Diaspora | 685 Mission St @ 3rd

Yerba Buena Alliance Mixer, 5:30-7:30 pm + Free Admission, 5- 8 pm | FREE | Enjoy free admission to their current exhibition, Crosscurrents: Africa and Black Diasporas in Dialogue, 1960-1980. The MoAD Salon will be the scene for the Yerba Buena Alliance Neighborhood Mixer. Join us for drinks, bites, and DJ Craft Spells from 5:30-7:30 pm and meet MoAD’s new Executive Director Linda Harrison. network with the Yerba Buena business, civic, cultural, and residential leaders, and submit your business card for a chance to win a $50 gift card to Tout Sweet Patisserie at the 3rd floor of Macy’s Union Square.

5) Museum of Performance and Design | 893B Folsom Street @ 5th

Show & Tell with Supriya Wronkiewicz of San Francisco Ballet, 5-7:30 pm | FREE | MP+D joins Third Thursday in Yerba Buena with a show and tell showcasing rare pieces from the San Francisco Ballet’s archives dating back to the 1930s including early film footage in conjunction with SFB’s 81st Season. Supriya Wronkiewicz, the Archivist for the San Francisco Ballet will present the rare items. All MP+D exhibits and viewing stations are open.

6) UC Berkeley Extension Art & Design Gallery | 95 3rd Street @ Mission

Jennifer Mahoney, Interior Design and Interior Architecture Instructor, presents large charcoal drawings that explore a San Francisco street scene and a stand of Monterrey Pines.

7) Yerba Buena Center for the Arts | 701 Mission St @ 3rd

YBCA ConVerge, 4-8 pm | FREE | Please join for an evening of gathering dirt—quite literally—featuring a new project by artist Ilana Crispi. The project, “Tenderloin Dirt Harvest: Please be seated on the ground,” invites patrons to drink and eat from ceramic vessels made from Tenderloin soil. The evening features lively discussions and stories gathered from a place they call their next-door neighborhood.

A ) B Restaurant and Bar | 720 Howard St above the gardens waterfall

Extended Happy Hour and $6 cocktails, 5–10 pm | Discounts with Wristband | B Restaurant and Bar is celebrating Third Thursday with extended happy hour throughout the entire evening for anyone with a Third Thursday wristband. A live DJ will be spinning throughout happy hour.
