City to Host Public Viewing of Sunday’s Potential Clinching World Series Away Game for Families, Fans

San Francisco, CA –Mayor Edwin M. Lee Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced that Sunday’s Game Four of 2012 World Series will be publicly broadcast live in Civic Center Plaza for families and fans to gather and cheer the San Francisco Giants onto a potential World Championship against the Detroit Tigers. Game Four will be played in Detroit’s Comerica Park on Sunday. A jumbotron screen will broadcast the potential clinching game of the World Series in front of San Francisco City Hall. The City previously received permission from Major League Baseball to show the potential clinching away game.

This is an alcohol-free event. San Francisco Police and Recreation and Park Departments will be on hand to monitor and enforce a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and other controlled substances in Civic Center Plaza.

“The San Francisco Giants’ outstanding performance in the World Series has electrified and unified the entire City,” said Mayor Lee. “The Giants are truly the comeback team, and San Francisco is completely awash in Giants fever. The game that could clinch the Series may be in Detroit, but we’re creating an opportunity right in front of City Hall for families to gather and cheer the Giants to another World Championship.”

The Mayor’s Office, in collaboration with the Recreation and Park Department, will broadcast the potential clinching away game in Civic Center Plaza. In keeping with the event focus on families, alcohol will not be sold or permitted on Civic Center Plaza during the broadcast. Those attending the broadcast are encouraged to come early to secure a spot and take public transportation via MUNI or BART to Civic Center or Van Ness stations.

“I also want to encourage fans from across the Bay Area to watch the game at their neighborhood restaurants and bars,” said Mayor Lee. “Let’s lift our local economy and small businesses while we’re boosting the Giants to a World Series victory.”

Mayor Lee is urging Giants fans and local businesses to show their pride in the National League Champion team by wearing the Orange & Black or displaying signs, flags or any form of support for the hometown team.

The San Francisco Giants flag will continue to fly over City Hall, and City Hall, Coit Tower, the Ferry Building, the Embarcadero Center, the TransAmerica Pyramid, the War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco International Airport, the City’s Official Tree in front of McLaren Lodge and other San Francisco buildings and landmarks will all be lit in Giants Orange until the end of the World Series.

Mayor Lee and the San Francisco Giants joined with Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and the Detroit Tigers to urge all fans to treat each other with respect. Wherever tfans choose to watch the game to be safe and practice good sportsmanship. In the end, the World Series celebrates the game of baseball, and rivalries should remain on the field.
