Celebrate the longest night of the year with the tallest trees on earth. Rain or shine, dress warmly, and come celebrate Winter Solstice at Muir Woods on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 (3-8 P.M.).
Please note: We recommend you think twice about making the trek to Muir Woods on 12/21 as it’s likely to be too crowded to enjoy.
Free program of Solstice crown and wreath-making, shadow puppet play, Solstice stories, music, folk dances , bonfires, and more in the Muir Woods Plaza. Walk quietly through the forest on a luminaria-lit trail. Nourish yourself with locally-grown and made warm food for sale at the Muir Woods Trading Company.
Dress warmly against the chill, bring a flashlight and meet in front of the Visitor Center.

Schedule of Events
- 3:30 – 5 PM Solstice crown-making with Catherine Ramberg Visitor Center; Wreath-making in front of the flagpole; Artist and Storyteller Ane Carla makes solstice spiders on stage; Loosely Knits ensemble in Visitor Center; Bonfires by Peter Bergen & Boy Scout Troop 2000 at the Plaza; Scientist Sara Moore with tales of Global Climate Change from the North Pole at the entrance arch; Species of the Year coloring books and calendars with Michelle O’Herron; banana slug and salmon hats with Holly Groves.
- 5 – 5:30 Solstice singing around the bonfires
- 5:30 PM Plaza Solstice Program – Stories, Shadow Puppet Play & Sing Along
- 7:00 PM “Singing for All Life, Let There Be Peace On Earth” Deer Creek Morris Dancers: Abbott’s Bromley Horn Dance

A Note of Caution About Attending This Event:
Please be aware that this is a very small event – Muir Woods is not set up to handle huge crowds, and the amount of parking is woefully small. So if celebrating the winter solstice is very important event to you, it might be worth the trip, but if you don’t like crowds or are just going on a whim, we recommend you think twice about making the trek as it’s likely to be too crowded to enjoy.A special Solstice Shuttle will pick up passengers at designated stops along Muir Woods Road and at Muir Beach from 3pm to 8pm
