Event Details

The 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration entitled, “Sustaining the Dream: Through Community and Service“, will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

The commemorative march will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the march on Selma, Alabama, to be led by clerics and faith leaders under the direction of the San Francisco Interfaith Council. A short interfaith service will follow at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Waterfall, where the Rev. Dr. Amos C. Brown, a former student of Dr. King and national board member and president of the San Francisco Chapter of the NAACP, will be honored for a lifetime of service to the civil rights movement.

ACTIVITY SCHEDULE:

  • 9:00 to 4:30 — Mind, Body and Soul Festival at The Forum at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
  • 9:00 to 4:30 — San Francisco Literary and Children’s Reading Festival at the Grand Lobby at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
  • 10:00 to 5:00 — Free museum entry at Contemporary Jewish Museum & Museum of the African Diaspora
  • 11:00 — March and Parade begins at the Caltrains Depot at 4th St. & Townsend Ave. and proceeds to Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
  • 12:15 to 2:00 — “King in Five Vignettes” special presentation at Novellus Theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (doors open at 11:50 am)
