As Oakland and the surrounding Alameda County area dig in their heels to combat the homeless crisis, Taylor Church prepares to do its part.
On Sunday, Nov. 24, Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church, will hold its 5th Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Meal event for the homeless from 9 am to 3 pm in the church’s Fellowship Hall.

FREEThis is a home cooked Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings: turkey, dressing, gravy, ham, rolls, macaroni and cheese, green beans, yams, cranberry sauce, cake and pie. In addition to, there will also have free clothes, free groceries to be given away and will be offering free Haircut from Kutz Barber “Snoop” who is donating his service to the community for Taylor’s Pre-Thanksgiving celebration. Also featuring Dilemma’s Barber Shop.
Plus there will be a free shower from 8 am to 3 pm, in partnership with Lavamae Organization.
Homelessness in Oakland/Alameda increased substantially between 2015 and 2017, as shown by the results of the Everyone Counts. Biennial point-in-time count and survey performed by the Everyone Home initiative. The number jumped from 4,040 to 5,629, a 29-percent increase. According to local news reports, 2,761 live in Oakland.
