Oakland’s longtime Home of Chicken & Waffles is closing its doors at the end of the month, bringing more than two decades of fried chicken, waffles, Southern comfort food, and community gatherings to an end.

Founder Derreck Johnson confirmed that the restaurant’s final day will be August 31, 2026. No specific reason for the closure was given.

The restaurant became a fixture near Jack London Square, and was known for giving back to the community like during its holiday meal distributions. It also became known for its notable guests over the years, including Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris, who both visited the restaurant in 2016.

Home of Chicken & Waffles spent nearly 20 years at its waterfront location at 444 Embarcadero West before moving to its current home at 247 Fourth St. in 2024.
