SF’s Beloved Bookstores are Back: What’s Now Open

Green Apple, City Lights, The Booksmith and Omnivore Books are back. Here’s the status of 16 of SF’s bookstores

Sick of all your current reads? Most of San Francisco’s most beloved indie bookstores are back open for business, with many of them having opened for in-store shopping.

Status as of 7/14/20

Open for In-Store Shopping

  • Adobe Books – In-Store – Mission Dist. / Open daily Noon to 7pm
  • Bird & Beckett Books & Records – In-Store – Glen Park / Chenery Street local bookstore open for curbside and in-store Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 7pm.
  • Book Passage – In-Store – Ferry Building / Open 10am to 6pm M-F, 8a-5p Saturday, Noon to 5pm Sunday.
  • Books Inc. – In-Store – Marina / Laurel Village / Opera Plaza / Open 10am to 6pm daily (Opera Plaza closed on Sundays). In-store browsing is know available in San Francisco, Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Campbell and will start in Berkeley and Alameda on Friday the 19th.
  • Borderland Books – In-Store – Mission Dist. / Science-fiction specialty store open daily 11am to 5pm
  • City Lights – In-Store – North Beach / Every day Noon to 8pm
  • Green Apple Books – In-Store – Inner Richmond / Inner Sunset / Clement St. open every day 10am to 9pm with used book buying hours 10am to 6pm. 9th Ave. open every day 10am to 8pm.
  • Kinokuniya – In-Store – Japantown / Selling extensive collection of manga, graphic novels in both English and Japanese. Japan Center location open 10:30am to 6pm daily
  • Ominivore Books on Food – In-Store – Noe Valley / The one and only culinary bookstore in Bay Area. Open 11am to 5pm
  • The Booksmith – In-Store – The Haight / You must wear a mask and maximum of 10 guests in store at any one time.

Curbside / Storefront Only

  • Alexander Book Company – Curbside Pickup Only – SoMa / Curbside pickup M-F from 10am to 2pm with booksellers available to discuss books
  • black bird bookstore – Curbside Pickup Only – Outer Sunset / Store is closed, but open daily 10am to 3pm for curbside pick-up
  • Christopher’s Books – Curbside Pickup Only – Potrero Hill / Store is closed, but available for curbside delivery or local deliveries each afternoon.
  • Dog Eared Books – Storefront Shopping – Castro / Mission Dist. / Although in-store shopping has not begun, you can other do curbside pickup, or Dog Eared will act as a storefront “concierge” and go find whatever books you need and you can browse through them before you buy (as long as you wear gloves) Castro open from Noon to 4pm. Valencia St. open from 11a to 7pm
  • The Green Arcade – Curbside Pickup Only – Hayes Valley / Specializing in books on San Francisco & California history, the environment, politics & social justice. Open Noon to 4pm M-F for curbside pickup.
  • BookShop West Portal – Curbside Pickup Only – West Portal / Locally-owned independent bookstore. Curbside pickup for scheduled orders Monday-Saturday from 11 AM – 4 PM.

  • Alley Cat Book – Closed – Mission Dist. / No mention of any pickup or shopping options.
  • Chronicle Books – Unknown – SoMa / No mention of any pickup or shopping options at Chronicle Books Headquarters on 680 Second St.
