Lydia Nakashima Degarrod will speak about her journey as an ethnographer and artist, tracing how the process of artmaking creates a way of being in the world that allows the artist to feel the emergence of memory, reflection and the possibility for symbolic healing. Using papermaking and immersive installations, she will show how these works can become transformative spaces where memory, migration, identity, and loss can be held, contemplated, and reimagined.
Moving between ethnography, material practice, and poetic inquiry, Lydia will explore the ways art can give form to invisible histories and open possibilities for symbolic healing. She will also reflect on her curatorial work with artworks created by Japanese artists incarcerated in internment camps during World War II, examining how artistic practice can preserve cultural memory, bear witness to injustice, and sustain resilience across generations.
