Persepolis, Film Showing and Discussion

Marjane Satrapi’s graphic memoir Persepolis (translated into dozens of languages) brought the humanity of the Iranian people to millions around the world. In her award-winning film based on the memoir, young ‘Marji’ watches her family’s dream being fulfilled when the hated Shah is overthrown in the Iranian Revolution of 1979, only to witness and rebel against the new Iran, now ruled by the repressive Islamic fundamentalist regime.

In a 2012 interview Satrapi also spoke against the growing Christian fascist movement in the U.S.  saying “They are the same! The secular people, we have no country. We the people — all the secular people who are looking for freedom — we have to keep together. We are international, as they” — the fanatics of all religions — “are international.”

We screen Persepolis as the US and Israel have carried out an unprovoked and criminal war that started on 2/28/26. Satrapi opposed both the horrific rule of the US-backed Shah of Iran, AND the rule of the repressive Islamic Republic, which just months ago murdered thousands of protesters. This understanding and perspective is urgently needed now in relation to the US and Israel’s unjust attack on Iran and Trump’s repeated threats against Iran and Iranian civilians: to annihilate the “whole civilization” and bomb Iran “back to the Stone Age.”

Marjane Satrapi, her courage and art, will be deeply missed: her spirit of rebellion will live on.
