Artist Andy Goldsworthy Brings 50 Earth-Dyed Flags to SF
If you’ve ever seen one of Andy Goldsworthy‘s famous outdoor art installations, you know he has a way of turning natural materials into something unexpectedly beautiful. Now, one of his newest works has landed in San Francisco for its West Coast debut.
On display at Fort Mason through July 30, Red Flags features 50 oversized flags, each stained with red earth collected from one of the 50 U.S. states. Instead of state symbols or patriotic imagery, the installation lets the colors of the soil tell the story, with each flag taking on a different shade depending on where its earth came from. Together, they create a striking display of colors ranging from pale ochre to deep rust.
The free exhibition runs through July 30 and is open Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (It’s closed July 4–5 and July 11–12.) A free public reception takes place Friday, July 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and the gallery will stay open until 8 p.m. during the Fort Mason Night Market on July 24.
