New Bay Bridge Opening Day

Get ready for the opening of the New Bay Bridge & Bike Path
By - posted 9/2/2013 No Comment

The new east span of the Bay Bridge is scheduled to open to cars, trucks and motorcycles at 5 am on September 3, 2013, the day after Labor Day.

Update: the bridge is now scheduled to open up early –  between 9pm and 10pm on Monday 9/2.

Unfortunately, the grand opening celebration has been cancelled. The bridge bash was originally going to feature a bridge walk, 10-kilometer and half-marathon runs, a bike ride, and fireworks launched from both ends of the bridge that were to rival the Golden Gate Bridge 75th anniversary hoopla of 2012.

Excited East Bay and SF dwellers will simply have to revel in a driving across the brand-spankin’ new, seismically safe, beautiful new east span stretching from West Oakland to Treasure Island.

New Bay Bridge Bike Ride Day: Grand Opening
Tuesday, September 3, 2013 – 6pm
Meet at West Oakland BART
FREE but RSVP Requested

Join the East Bay Bike Coalition (EBBC) at 6 pm on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at West Oakland BART for a ride out on to the world’s longest bike pier, the new Alexander Zuckermann Bicycle-Pedestrian Path of the Oakland Span of the new Bay Bridge. The current path doesn’t actually reach Treasure Island yet (that’s why it’s called a “bike pier” at the moment) but it’s sure to afford some great views of the bay, so it’s still worth checking out.

Afterwards join EBBC for pizza and drinks (for purchase) afterwards at the Hot Italian Restaurant in Emeryville. The Bike Path closes at 8 pm, so you’ll need to get on out there.

And everything is subject to delays and time changes and maybe even early openings. – you know how bridges are.
