Thursday, May 12, 2011 is Bike to Work Day.

The San Francisco Bike Coalition, along with merchants and the city’s blessing, is pushing commuters to try biking with Commuter Convoys departing from neighborhoods all over, 25 Energizer Stations with free snacks and Bike Doctors at some of them for free tuneups, free raffle prizes, lots of goodies and even a party and fashion show.

Here are some of the events going on during Bike to Work Day in San Francisco:

Bicycling Commuter Convoys: Ride with others

Start the morning by riding your bike downtown (or to the South Bay) with a Commuter Convoy. They provide the enjoyment and safety of riding with a group and are led by experienced cyclists.

Neighborhood Meet-Up Spots (leave at 7:45 am to downtown)

  • Richmond: Blue Danube, 306 Clement St at 4th Ave
  • Marina: Peet’s, 2156 Chestnut at Steiner St
  • Nob Hill: It’s a Grind, 1800 Polk St at Washington
  • Sunset: House of Coffee, 1618 Noriega St at 23rd Ave.
  • NOPA: Sacred Grounds, 2095 Hayes St at Clayton
  • Potrero: Coffee Bar, Florida at Mariposa St
  • Portola Heights: Creighton’s Bakery, 673 Portola Dr at Teresita Blvd
  • Castro: Castro Street Plaza, 17th St at Castro St
  • Mission: L’s Cafe, 2871 24th St at Florida St
  • Bayview: Road House, 5191 3rd St at Thomas St
  • Excelsior: Naples Green, Naples St at Geneva Plaza
  • San Francisco to Mountain View (SF2G): 24th St at Mission St (departs at 6:15am, see sf2g.com

Energizer Stations: 25 stops all over the city for a quick free snack & beverage

Volunteers cheer on people riding bikes around San Francisco at 25 official Energizer Stations. Each station provides free snacks and beverages, as well as convenient reusable tote bags for future commutes, filled with free goodies such as bike lights. Some have free bike tuneups and free raffle prizes.

There are also Energizer Stations all over the Bay Area. See the maps for locations in Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Marin County, San Mateo County and more.

Bike Doctors: Get Some Free Basic Bike Maintenance

Mechanics from local bike shops will help you dust off your old bike and provide free basic bike maintenance to get you rolling on Bike to Work Day, Thursday, May 12. Visit our Bike Doctors at one of the following Energizer Station locations:

Morning Bike Rx locations (7:30 am to 9:30 am):

Dress-Up Challenge & Fashion Show

The SF Bike Coalition has a special challenge for you. Your Dress-Up Challenge is to dress to the nines in your business suit this year for Bike to Work Day.

How to Play: Start planning your classy, bike-friendly Bike to Work Day outfit now. Post a photo of your look before Thursday, May 12, for a chance to win bikey prizes. To be entered into the raffle, simply post a photo to their wall on Facebook, their group on Flickr, or use Twitter to tweet a link to your photo @sfbc. We are tagging our photos #sfbtwd and #dressupchallenge. Winners are announced at the DNA Lounge party and fashion show.

SF Bicycle Coalition’s Annual Bike from Work Party and Fashion Show

You’re invited to the SF Bicycle Coalition’s fun and fabulous Bike from Work Party and Fashion Show. See models showing off the latest in bicycling style during the bike fashion show styled by Gwendolyn Lee Productions. There will be sweet raffle prizes and complimentary bicycle valet.

Bike Away From Work Party: for the East Bay commuters

Come to the East Bay Bicycle Coalition’s big celebration party the evening of Bike to Work Day. This year’s Bike Away from Work Party happens in Old Oakland, and features Cyclecide’s pedal-powered bike rides, the Big Tadoo Puppet Crew, The Fabulous Derailleurs, awards presentations, raffle prizes, Trumer Pils beer and Clif Bar Winery wines, as well as music from The Muddy Roses. Come out, and bring friends, and celebrate the close of another great Bike to Work Day in style.
