Spring at SFMOMA: A New Year with New Possibilities’
New year, new beginning. Despite the unrest that has kicked off 2021, hope, excitement, and shared experiences are on the horizon. This year, we intend to bring you the art of our time in ways that inspire. From the ahead-of-the-curve media installations of Nam June Paik to a dazzling Diego Rivera mural to an all-digital, all-inclusive Art Bash, SFMOMA has a marvelous year in the works.
A new year brings new outlooks. New points of view. New possibilities. At SFMOMA, projects years in the planning are coming into the galleries now, filling us with hope and anticipation for a more joyful, restorative trip around the sun for 2021.
This spring, SFMOMA will be the exclusive U.S. venue for Nam June Paik, a thrilling and long-overdue retrospective of the seminal media arts creator.
We’ll also welcome Diego Rivera’s dazzling 1939 mural The Marriage of the Artistic Expression of the North and of the South on this Continent — better known as Pan American Unity — which has undergone a meticulous restoration and relocation. It will be installed in the free Roberts Family Gallery space until its new permanent home at City College of San Francisco is completed.
And this fall‘s must-see Joan Mitchell exhibition will illuminate the legacy of this powerful, poetic artist.
Olafur Eliasson’s One-way colour tunnel sparkles on the oculus bridge again, and our galleries will be filled with old favorites, new works, and something intriguing around every corner. We look forward to welcoming you back to our sparkling clean galleries and fresh-air terraces as soon as we can safely reopen.
