Thanks to KRON4 for sharing the unfortunate news that Oakland’s gastropub Sidebar, located at 542 Grand Avenue, is set to close on January 27, 2024 after nearly 15 years.

The restaurant opened its doors on the northeast shore of Lake Merritt in February 2009. Sidebar describes itself as “an old school neighborhood eatery with timeless appeal and a modern approach, Sidebar is where Oakland’s past meets its present. Sit alongside Lake Merritt, and enjoy classic cocktails, good food, cold beer, and nice wine.”

Plus Funcheap happens to think that the Sidebar burger is one of the best in the bay. It’s spendy, yes (at $19) but every bite is worth it.

The original owners had sold the restaurant in 2022 to owners of Michelin Guide restaurant Bardo Lounge & Supper Club, Seth and Jenni Bergman. Sidebar owners are keeping the space, but they will use it as a prep and overflow space for Bardo’s private events.
