San Jose Plans to Open Up Streets & Sidewalks for Outdoor Dining
Thank you KRON4 for reporting that the city of San Jose is working on a plan to reopen restaurants while still adhering to social distancing requirements.
San José Mayor Sam Liccardo wanted to take advantage of the sunny weather by moving their city outdoors in creative ways to stay connected. On May 9, He posted the press conference on his Facebook Page where he talked about his plan on how to reopen restaurants while still adhering to social distancing requirements.
In an effort to help struggling restaurants during the CoronaVirus pandemic, the Mayor has proposed going “al fresco” or using streets, sidewalks, and parking for outdoor dining.
The proposed ordinance will provide local businesses—particularly restaurants— access to public space and private adjacent property for open-air operations, in anticipation of revisions to county health guidelines that will allow for the safe reopening of the economy.
The ordinance would allow businesses to apply for the temporary use of streets, surface lots, public parking lots, public recreation space and more for outdoor dining, exercise classes and other outdoor business operations– while complying with public health guidelines for social distancing.
“We’re working together as a community to keep our local businesses open, using lessons learned from programs like Viva Calle to push San José outside safely, as soon as we get the green light from public health officials,” he stated.
