San Francisco could be getting its biggest hospital upgrade in decades.

Kaiser Permanente is preparing to submit plans for a brand-new 14-story hospital at Geary Boulevard and Divisadero, directly across from its existing campus at the same intersection. If approved, it would be the organization’s first new hospital in San Francisco in more than 70 years.

The proposed facility would replace the current hospital, which dates back to 1954, and bring expanded services including a larger emergency department, about 300 private inpatient beds, and roughly 623,000 square feet of space. The existing hospital would continue operating during construction and later be converted into medical offices once the new building is complete.

The project is still in early stages, but timelines shared so far suggest construction could begin around 2028, with completion targeted for 2033. If built, it would be part of a larger long-term overhaul of the Geary and Divisadero medical campus, which also includes office buildings and parking structures.

For now, the plan is heading into the city review process next month.
