Thank goodness… San Francisco’s parking meter hours will not be expanded.

Thanks to KRON4 for sharing the news that the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has reached an agreement with SFMTA to put the brakes on their plan to expand the hours parking meters would be enforced.

SFMTA proposed expanding the meter hours to 10 pm on weekdays and adding Sunday meter hours from noon to 6 pm. Thanks to vocal San Franciscans who spoke out in droves to oppose the plans which were initially announced in May 2023. The Board of Supervisors received thousands of letters in opposition.

Prior to the agreement, Supervisor Safai had planned to propose a charter amendment that would have given the mayor accountability over any proposed fare increases or increased hours of operations and the power to block any fare increases. Since the agreement was made, Safai has tabled his proposal.

Notably, in 2008, SFMTA’s Board of Directors gave the Director of Transportation the sole power to control the parking meter rates and its hours of operation, revoking any public process for changes to the fees and hours.
