SF’s 21st Amendment Brewery Closing After 25 Years

Craft beer icon will close both locations on November 4

Sad news for Bay Area beer lovers: SF-born 21st Amendment Brewery is shutting down. Both the South Beach taproom and the San Leandro brewery will close their doors on November 4, 2025.

21st Amendment helped kick off SF’s craft beer scene back in 2000, opening just as Pac Bell Park (now Oracle Park) was transforming South Beach. The brewery grew quickly, moving operations into a massive former Kellogg’s factory in San Leandro by 2014 and ranking among the nation’s top 50 craft breweries by volume.

The closure comes after years of industry challenges. Sales have dropped about 20% each year since 2021, tariffs have raised costs for its all-canned lineup, and younger drinkers are shifting toward canned cocktails and hard seltzers. A recent leadership shakeup and the loss of lender support made it impossible to keep operations going.

There is a slim chance the brand could be revived under new ownership, but for now, November 4 will be the last day to raise a pint at one of SF’s most iconic breweries.
