SF’s “The Great Highway” Turns Into the “Great Sandway”
Thanks to SF Gate for sharing the news that after two unusually windy storms, San Francisco’s The Great Highway has turned into the Great Sandway.
An abundance of sand has taken over sections of The Great Highway, creating massive sand dunes that have engulfed traffic light poles and buried rip current signs.
This time of year usually does bring windy weather to Ocean Beach, but the recent storms have caused much more sand to accumulate along The Greatway and promenade that we’ve seen in years. Last week saw winds reaching up to 30 to 50 mph, which prompted the closure of the southbound lanes of the Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard since April 6 due to excessive sand buildup in the roadway. Thankfully, the northbound lanes were reopened last week.
It’s a big operation for San Francisco Public Works to clear the roads, but the department hopes to clear the southbound lanes this week pending weather conditions and staffing availability.
