SF’s Iconic Union Square Macy’s Will Stay Open & Get a Major Makeover
Macy’s flagship store in Union Square, a San Francisco icon spanning nearly a full city block, is staying put. Originally slated to close as part of the retailer’s national plan to shutter 150 underperforming stores, Macy’s will now remain open indefinitely. The news was confirmed by Mayor Daniel Lurie, who also announced that the department store is partnering with Bay Area developer TMG Partners to reimagine the space.
While plans are still in the early stages, TMG is considering a range of options for the 600,000 plus square foot property, including housing, offices, labs, retail, and arts or entertainment uses. Housing is being highlighted as an important focus for downtown. Macy’s current operations will continue uninterrupted throughout the process.
Union Square itself is seeing signs of a comeback after years of retail closures. Nearby, retailers like Zara are opening new flagship stores, the Nintendo Store debuted earlier this year, and the old Uniqlo space has a new tenant. Holiday preparations are already underway, including the Christmas tree and Winter Walk.
The partnership between Macy’s and TMG reflects broader efforts to revitalize downtown San Francisco and adapt to changing retail and office landscapes. TMG is also active on other nearby properties, including the Metreon and a historic office building at 149 New Montgomery Street.
Details on the next steps for Macy’s Union Square will be shared in the coming months.
