Sunday Parking Meters Are Coming Back to SF

For the first time since 2014, you’ll have to pay to park at a meter on Sundays

As part of the broad changes approved by SFMTA on Tuesday that included Muni fare hikes, San Francisco has also approved extending parking meter hours to include weeknights until 10pm and Sundays in some neighborhoods.

This isn’t the first time that SF has experimented with Sunday meters throughout the city. In January 2013 the city implemented Sunday meters, but that policy only lasted about 18 months before being rescinded in July 2014.

Plus there are a few areas in the city where Sunday meters have existed on SF Port property and near major event venues like, Fisherman’s Wharf, The Embarcadero, Nine off-street parking lots and Special Event Area around Oracle Park and Chase Center during special events.

An exact time table hasn’t been revealed yet as to when the Sunday and extended midweek parking meters will be implemented. Visit SFMTA.com to get updated when the changes are implemented. Currently, all SFMTA parking meters in the city are 50 cents an hour during the public health order.

Upcoming SFMTA Parking Meter Changes

Extended Parking Meter Hours (Weeknights and Sunday)

The SFMTA will partner local merchant associations to determine where extended meter hours.

  • Extend meter hours in specific neighborhood commercial districts until 10pm Monday through Saturday.
  • 6-10pm rates set at $2/hour less than the 3-6pm rate, minimum $1/hour
  • Meter rates adjusted over time using demand-responsive pricing
  • Extend short-term parking (green zones) and passenger loading (white zones) until 10pm or later where applicable
  • Data collection and evaluation, expansion to other areas if successful
  • Extended Meter Hours in some neighborhoods to include Sunday.
