Dorie’s new cookbook is about cooking everyday food with verve. There’s smoked salmon in that gorgeous brunch tart on the cover – dill, capers and cream cheese, too. (Think bagels and lox without the bagels.)

There are walnuts in the meatballs, Mediterranean spices in the shepherd’s pie and cranberries and lemon curd in my version of the beloved meringue dessert, Eton Mess. All unexpected. All designed to delight. Nothing hard about it.
