Event Details

Exploratorium Market Days: Free Art & Science Festival | Pier 15

Exploratorium Market Days is a series of free, open-air, mini-festivals that bring together scientists, artists, and educators to present an abundant bazaar of new ideas and activities to the Exploratorium’s public plaza at Pier 15 from 11 am to 3 pm on the third Saturday of each month from July through October, 2014.

>> Market Days events at Pier 15 are free and open to the public. Please note that museum admission is not free – this event takes place in the open-to-the-public areas.

Market Days will offer a bounty of free entertainment – from startling encounters with cutting-edge technology, to sensory explorations of spices and herbs, to transformations of trash into wondrous new masterpieces.

Just as San Francisco’s late-in-the-year summertime comes to a close, and cool autumn nights begin, the Exploratorium will celebrate its final Market Days open-air festival of the season. Market Days: Heirlooms will look at the great experiments, cultural practices and traditions that make human culture rich.

The free, family-friendly event is from 11 am to 3 pm on the Exploratorium’s public plaza at Pier 15, just a short walk from the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market.

Explore man-made treasures worth passing on—from food and cooking traditions, to tools, folklore, history-making ideas, and more. Learn phrases from endangered languages, and explore the craft of patchwork, darning, and needlework as ways to repair and recreate pieces that can be passed on.

Uncover the building blocks of every person’s heritage with DNA extractions, and learn about lichens, which are members of one of the Earth’s oldest plant families. From recipe and seed swaps to the heritage of sourdough – a true San Francisco heirloom – it’s a way to celebrate the richness of tradition with an eye on what the future holds.
