Event Details

Friday Nights at the de Young offers a variety of interdisciplinary arts programs, including live music, poetry, films, dance, tours, talks and more. Season Eight is every Friday night from March 30 – November 23, 2012.

This weekly after-hours art “happening” changes every week, but typically includes a mix of live music, dance performances, film screenings, panel discussions, lectures, artist demonstrations, special performances, hands-on art activities and more. Plus the observation tower is open until 8:15pm.

May 4, 2012 – Tattoo Culture

  • The henna artists from Henna Garden Events & Entertainment will be decorating guests with Ed Hardy and Gaultier inspired designs.
  • The live henna art show will highlight Henna Garden’s top artists as the model’s body is transformed into a human canvas, and a stunning upper body henna tattoo is drawn before the guests eyes.
  • Live Music by the Matt Small Trio – Sets at 6:30-7:15 and 7:45-8:30 p.m.
Longtime Bay Area collaborators Steve Adams and Matt Small will be joined by New York–based Grammy Award–winning world percussionist Shane Shanahan. This eclectic trio will perform a blend of jazz and original music infused with a wide variety of styles from around the globe.
  • Ed Hardy will introduce Ed Hardy: Tattoo the World (Docurama Films, 2011), which reflects the artist’s journey, his unexpected rise to cult status, and his influence on pop culture. With one foot in the world of tattooing and the other planted in the fine arts, each informs the other.

Walk in and experience all public programs for free. But to view the permanent collection or special exhibitions, admission tickets are required.
