SF History Night | Pacific Heights

Each month, a local history expert hosts a themed talk usually accompanied by a slide show with light refreshments.

Tuesday, March 25, 2014
Grand Emporiums of Old San Francisco | SF History Night | Pacific Heights

Author Therese Poletti will present a brief history of SF’s merchant princes and princesses and the department stores they founded.

We’ll learn about The Emporium, Roos Brothers, City of Paris, Hastings, H. Liebes, I. Magnin, Joseph Magnin, Ransohoff’s, O’Connor Moffett (now Macy’s), and a little about Gump’s.

While most of the stores are no longer extant, their altered buildings can still be visited today. Therese’s trip back in time will include the stores’ founders and specialties, the architecture and grand interiors, as well as the death of the family-owned department store.
