Hike SF’s Mount Sutro: Skyline Views + Serenity 900′ Above the City (Jan. 18-19)
Here’s a great free weekend hike idea from Nico Madrigal-Yankowski from SFGATE
In the heart of San Francisco is a place so serene that you can’t hear the honking of car horns or the ringing of cellphones or the chatter of daily life.
It’s a marvel to look up and see an occasional leaf twirling down. The crevices of the mountainside dive steeply downhill and are shrouded in varying shades of green and brown from the array of flora. The air smells of fresh dew, and branches whip, crack and snap from the wind. It’s almost strange this place exists dead in the center of a metropolis.
In fact, Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve on the UCSF campus nearly disappeared in the 2010s. Fortunately, it persists, and you can hike to the top of Mount Sutro and sit on the benches to rest, staring at the sprawling city. It’s still quiet. Peaceful. Take it in, unhurried, because your focus will be heightened again on the walk downhill back to reality.
Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve, Fairy Gates Trailhead, 211 Belgrave Ave., San Francisco. Open daily, sunrise to sunset.
