Event Details

Learn the art of Japanese comics in an Intro to Manga Drawing Workshop.

The secrets of manga faces and expressions, basic character design, and comics will be revealed. Manga is the Japanese word for comics and literally translates to “whimsical pictures.” Anime is the Japanese word for animation. In the US, manga and anime are used interchangeably to describe a drawing style inspired by manga and/or anime.

In this hands-on workshop taught by Karen Luk, students will draw and compare a realistic face to a manga-style face with different expressions. Chibis (cute and small character types) are also taught, along with standard proportions for manga characters. Basic drawing skills are helpful, but not required. Instructional materials are provided, suitable for pre-teens up to high schoolers.

Karen Luk is a drawer of words, writer of images and erstwhile sword fighter. She is a teacher and freelance illustrator. At state and national conferences, Luk has presented on manga and anime history and comics as a storytelling medium, and is a graduate of the California College of Art. karenluk.net
