The “Quadrantids” is 2021’s first major meteor shower. Unfortunately for 2021 a bright moon close to the radiant of the shower will light up the sky on the expected peak night (late January 2 until dawn January 3)

Typically this meteor shows can produce 50-100 meteors per hour in a dark sky, the peak time is very narrow and in 2021 it’s expect to be able to see 25 meteors/hour

In 2021 the International Meteor Organization gives the peak as January 3 at 14:30 UTC. (6:30am in San Francisco) If that prediction of the peak holds true, western North America has a good shot at viewing the shower at its best during the predawn hours on early Sunday morning, January 3.

How best to view meteor showers?

  1. Get away from city lights
  2. Give yourself at least 15-30 minutes to let your eyes adjust for the dark
  3. Meteor watching is a waiting game
