PROGRAM:
Grażyna Bacewicz – Concerto for String Orchestra
Camille Saint-Saëns – Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso for violin and orchestra
Camille Saint-Saëns – Havanaise in E major, Op. 83 for violin and orchestra
Hiro Yoshimura, violin – Debut Artist
Franz Joseph Haydn – Symphony No. 103 “Drumroll”
With the premiere of Grażyna Bacewicz’s Concerto for String Orchestra in 1950, Polish classical music was forever changed. Lauding the work, a fellow composer noted, “her ‘Concerto for String Orchestra’, written with gusto and energy, brimming with fluent inventiveness and excellent instrumentation ideas, has finally woken us up from lethargy.” It is a perfect piece to show off the brilliance and virtuosity of the SFCO’s string players. Following, we introduce a younger string playing virtuoso, our 2024/25 Debut Artist, violinist Hiro Yoshimura. Hiro will entrance you with two of the most famous pieces in the violin repertoire, the Havanaise and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns. Our program concludes with Haydn’s Symphony No. 103, the “Drumroll.” The second to last symphony he would write, (yes, he really did compose 104), is filled with excitement and fanfare.
