Event Details

All Souls’ Night is a soulful night of art, music, and food honoring neighborly love and action in the Western Addition from the ’60s to now.

There’s a $5 suggested donation, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Free for youth 18 and under.

Celebrate and honor nonviolent activism and community organizing of Hannibal Williams and other leaders and everyday heroes who stood up for their rights during the Western Addition Redevelopment Project. Please bring healthy-ish soul food to share.

All Souls’ Night Schedule

  • 6 pm: Musical Procession
    Marcus Books, 1712 Fillmore Street
    Bring music makers/dress inspired by ’60s neighborhood activism and join the family-friendly eight-block musical procession from Marcus Books to New Lib Garden led by Archbishop King of Saint John Coltrane Church
  • 7-10 pm: Art, Music and Healthy-ish Soul Food
    New Liberation Community Garden, 1100 Divisadero Street at Eddy
    Wear costumes, bring music, instruments and picket signs in the style of the 1960s.

Background & Inspiration

In the midst of the 1960s, Western Addition Redevelopment Project, Hannibal Williams – Founder of New Liberation Church – laid his body down in front of a bulldozer set to demolish a beloved Victorian with rich cultural significance. The building that was saved – once home to the legendary Bop City jazz club – and was moved from its Polk Street location to 1712 Fillmore; it has been the site of Marcus Books since 1980.

All money raised will benefit Marcus Books (now in danger of being displaced from their historic building) and support book clubs/lending library at New Liberation Community Garden.
