Street Utopia North Beach 2010 is a grassroots organization with the goal of increasing, improving & democratizing public space in North Beach, San Francisco.

On January 9th they’ll be hosting a street festival with films depicting “livable cities” to inspire, food from street cart vendors, an art show, and a presentation of utopian designs that aim to reclaim and enhance North Beach and point to a brighter pedestrian friendly future for the neighborhood.

Where: The intersection of Columbus & Montgomery in the Financial District. Food is outdoors, films and art will be inside #1 Columbus (in a previously empty storefront in the building on the NW corner of Montgomery and Columbus) – Look for a sign that says “Martha Egan.”

Street Utopia 2010 Event Details:
On January 9, 2010 (Saturday) from 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. we will present the first of our quarterly exhibits at #1 Columbus Avenue — our event will:

  • Show films depicting “livable city” policies around the world (Bogota, Curitiba, Copenhagen, Freiburg, Amsterdam, Portland, Vancouver, Vienna, etc)
  • Offer food by San Francisco street-cart vendors: The Girl From Empanada, Natalie’s Bike Basket Pies, The Hot Dog Man, and Sensuous Salad Lady. Food begins at 5:30 p.m..
  • Introduce public speakers on topics such as urban sustainability & the international “public space ” movement
  • Display local artwork by painter Lutzka Zivny (www.lutzkazivny.com), and photographer Chris Ferris (www.spacebetween.info). Art show begins at 5:30 p. m.
  • Present a variety of utopian designs that reclaim and enhance North Beach streets, sidewalks, parks and other public spaces. Street Utopia believes streets must abandon their present autos-only utilization — streets are about democracy, movement, context, food, socializing and human connections.
