Event Details

pearl ubungen dances in outdoor and intimate spaces within the sound envelope of the San Francisco ensemble led by saxophonist Salim Washington (from NYC/South Africa). As a fourth generation San Franciscan, choreographer/cultural activist ubungen reflects on anti-Asian hate crimes, the pandemic, gentrification, police use of excessive force, and the ongoing crisis of houselessness.

This event culminates the immersive community-based residency exploring the theme of Sacred City: Winter in America. Ubungen and Washington will mark the transition from winter into spring with Khata. This ritual performance makes offerings through movement and sonic elements and features martial artist Dong Nguyen and several local musicians. Conceived and directed by ubungen beginning in 2021, it has evolved this year to include special guest Washington.
