San Francisco is moving forward with plans to upgrade Twin Peaks with new trails, overlooks, and a car-free promenade.
The project, which has a groundbreaking Ceremony on April 29, 2026, will convert the closed eastern stretch of Twin Peaks Boulevard into a new linear park designed for walking, biking, and taking in the views.
What’s Planned
- Two parallel trails
- A paved, ADA-accessible path for bikes, strollers, and wheelchairs
- A softer natural-surface trail for walking and jogging
- New scenic overlooks
- Seating areas, including concrete seat walls
- Bike racks and updated signage
- Habitat restoration to protect sensitive areas, including the endangered Mission Blue Butterfly
- Better trail connections
The promenade is designed to link into larger trail networks, including the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the Creeks to Peaks Trail.
Recent improvements at Twin Peaks include new trail segments, repaired steps, erosion control, and clearer wayfinding. These updates address long-standing issues with trail conditions and informal paths .
When will it open?
There’s two different timelines floating about from the parks and rec department. One says that the prommeande will be ready “late 2026” – another hints that it won’t be until 2027. If you’ve live in SF long enough, you know to always bet on the over.

April 29, 2-3 PM 501 Twin Peaks Boulevard, in the lot between the two peaks Park on Crestline Drive or Christmas Tree Point Twin Peaks Trails Improvement and Promenade Project Illustration of Twin Peaks and project featuresBackground Twin Peaks is one of San Francisco’s most iconic open spaces, offering sweeping 360-degree views of the city and Bay Area. At the outset of this effort, the trail network was in poor condition, with failing steps, redundant social trails that caused erosion and loss of sensitive habitat, and a lack of signage for wayfinding. The area also holds the potential to connect with the citywide Creeks to Peaks trail system and the larger Bay Area Ridge Trail network. At the summit, circulation patterns created conflict between vehicle use and pedestrian access, shaping how visitors experienced the landscape. Scope of Work The renovation of the Twin Peaks Trails has been completed, featuring installation of new steps, retaining walls, fencing to protect habitat, habitat restoration, and updated wayfinding signage. These improvements enhance safety, reduce erosion, protect sensitive natural areas, and create a more enjoyable experience for visitors. With this milestone, the project achieves a major goal: establishing a trail network that connects directly to both the Creeks-to-Peaks Trail and the regional Bay Area Ridge Trail. The new Crestline Connector also links the summit to the nearby MUNI bus stop, making Twin Peaks more accessible to visitors traveling without a car. The forthcoming Twin Peaks Promenade Project will transform the permanently closed section of Twin Peaks Boulevard into a vibrant linear park. The design includes two parallel trails: a paved path providing ADA accessibility for strollers, wheelchairs, and bicycles, paired with a softer ParkTread trail for walkers and joggers. Planned amenities include overlooks, new seating areas, concrete seatwalls that double as casual skate features, bike racks, and restored habitat. Interpretive and wayfinding signage will highlight Twin Peaks’ unique natural and cultural features, including the endangered Mission Blue Butterfly. The Promenade will also provide direct connections to the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the Creeks-to-Peaks Trail, reinforcing Twin Peaks as a key hub in San Francisco’s open space network._
