Wild Oakland Walks
Wild Oakland leads free, fun and educational guided environmental walks for busy urbanites.
They are a 100% volunteer organization, from the guiding committee to the walk leaders who donate their time because of a shared passion for ecology and education.
This walk at Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve will introduce a variety of edible and useful plants, some simple identification tips, various ways humans have used these plants, and a little natural history of select plants and plant communities.
Free, but an RSVP is required to info@wildoakland.org
Key species will include chinquapin, black huckleberry, manzanita, iris, California bay, hazelnut, and ocean spray. This walk will not include collection or tasting. The walk leader will be Neahga Leonard, a conservation biologist who has also worked as an archeologist, winery cellar-master, and bear tracker.
Meet at the main parking lot on Skyline Boulevard (just south of Elverton Drive), right next to the Huckleberry trailhead. The walk will start on the upper trail where it’s flat and there is a greater variety of plants and micro-habitats, then drop to the lower trail and return to the parking lot.
