Event Details

Unlike many cultural celebrations, the Cambodian New Year Festival in the Tenderloin is striving to be an even blend of traditional festivities and modern ones, more serious functions and lighter revelries.

In the morning, a Cambodian monk will give the customary blessings and then the party starts: traditional food (for sale) that an organizer described as “one giant BBQ,” games and a giant jumper for the kids. There’s also Cambodian dancing followed by break dancing but also poetry readings.

Please keep in mind that this is not a huge street festival, but rather a more intimate neighborhood festival that usually has around 400 people.

Did you know? In the most recent census, the Cambodian population in the United States was estimated at 217,500 and the Bay Area holds the fourth largest concentration of Cambodian Americans; an estimated 10,500 Cambodians live here.
