About My Man Godfrey (1936)

My Man Godfrey challenges socioeconomic norms: it follows the screwball tradition of two lead characters in completely different financial statuses: Irene, a wealthy socialite played by Carole Lombard, and Godfrey, a homeless, poor man who Irene selects as her “forgotten man” for a scavenger hunt. Nearly 90 years later, this comedic outlook on the unfairness of society’s hierarchies might be less outdated than you think.

Carole Lombard, the lead actress in My Man Godfrey, was a leading comedienne of the 1930s who paved the path for Lucille Ball two decades later. William Powell, the leading man in the title role of Godfrey, was most well-known for his roles with Myrna Loy in The Thin Man films. Both were previously married to each other when they appeared in the film and went on to have high-profile relationships well-known today: Lombard with Clark Gable and Powell with Jean Harlow.
