“Chromatherapy” New Art Exhibit (Dec. 12 – Jan. 23)

Heron Arts is pleased to announce the two-person exhibition Chromatherapy featuring Erik Otto and Liz Tran. The exhibition explores the use of color and how it affects emotions. The exhibition will be on view at Heron Arts until January 23rd, 2020. The opening reception for Chromatherapy is Saturday, December 12th, 2020, from 4-9pm and is free and open to the public. A panel discussion between the artists and Laura Guido-Clark (Love Good Color) will be held online via Zoom on January 14th at 5:30 pm PST.

Celebrated color field painter Mark Rothko once said, “A painting is not a picture of an experience, but is the experience.” In Chromatherapy, artists Erik Otto and Liz Tran use color as a narrative tool to express feelings and mood states. Color has the power to evoke many sentiments, as well as to create a sense of action. Chromatherapy explores the intentionality of color choices in artwork, how it is used to help us understand our surroundings and selves, as well as to provoke change, emotion, and action. 2020 has been filled with many hurdles. The artists take into account the events of the year to create a playful, soothing, and reflective exhibition and experience.

Looking even more deeply into the emotions of color, we are working with Laura Guido-Clark, founder of LOVE GOOD COLOR®. Laura will analyze Otto and Tran’s artwork based on her theories of color and emotion through her color system, LOVE GOOD COLOR® which empowers people to use color as a tool to design and evaluate products and environments for emotive impact. Laura is also the founder of Project Color Corps, a volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to creating change by painting under invested neighborhoods with color and patterns that impart positive messages of optimism and hope. A percentage of artwork proceeds will go towards Project Color Corps.

Accompanying the exhibition will be a sound experience by Unicorn Heads. The sounds by Unicorn Heads will be a modern composition of mood music – evocative, stirring, and emotional. Original music to aimed to enhance the listener’s mood and the aural environment. Connor O’Sullivan (Unicorn Heads) is an accomplished music producer with over a decade of experience in the audio post-production industry, drawing from a diverse musical background producing Americana, rock, indie-rock, country, folk, dance, electronic, post-rock, IDM, ambient, and orchestral music.

Erik Otto

Erik Otto is an American abstract artist working in the creative disciplines of mixed-media painting, neon sculpture, and site-specific installation since 2005. Otto received a BFA from San Jose State University in California. His work has been shown in exhibitions nationally in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and internationally in Vancouver, Mexico City and Berlin. He was selected for the SF Recology Artist-in-Residence Program, received the VSCO Artist Initiative Grant, and produced work for YBCA Bay Area Now 7. He currently has work held in the private collections of Grand Hyatt, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Google, One Medical Group, Adobe Systems, and Uber Technologies. Otto has also produced numerous self-initiated projects; one including a 6-month art residency in Mexico City in an abandoned building prior to its demolition.

Otto was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, currently based in New York City, with studios in Brooklyn, NY and San Francisco, CA

Liz Tran

Channeling subjects such as dream imagery, imagined landscapes, geodes, outer space and The Big Bang, Tran explores the shapes of nature, with the infusion of fantastical, pulsing synthetic hues. The psychedelic visuals are harvested from the place where inner-verse meets outer-verse, where optical misfires combine with a vacuum pull moving at the speed of light. Through painting, sculpture and installation, she creates atmospheres that aim to activate.
Public collections of Tran’s work include the City of Seattle’s Portable Works Collection, Capital One, Vulcan Inc., Baer Art Center, Camac Art Centre, The El Paso Children’s Hospital, Harborview Medical Center, The King County Public Art Collection and The Child Center. Tran has completed multiple special projects and installations, including work for VH1Save the Music Foundation, The Upstream Music Fest, The Seattle Art Museum, The Brain Project Toronto, Public Art at The Aqua Art Fair Miami and Vulcan Inc.

She has been awarded multiple fellowships and grants; including a Grant for Artist Projects (GAP) from Artist Trust, Clowes Fellowship for residency at the Vermont Studio Center, the Nellie Cornish Scholarship and residency at The Camac Art Centre in France, The Baer Art Center in Iceland, Jentel, Millay Colony for the Arts and The Center for Contemporary Printmaking. She resides in Seattle, WA.

Heron Arts

Heron Arts was founded in 2013 by Mark Slee, an active member of San Francisco’s creative community, organizing events since the mid-2000s. He is joined in 2015 by director Tova Lobatz, who is pursuing ambitious programming that encompasses installations and experiential, interactive environments, alongside traditional gallery exhibitions. Collectively they hope to provide San Francisco with a fresh outlook on contemporary beauty in the arts.
