Grantwritng for Writers: How to Attain Financial Support for Your Writing with Denise Pate
Historically, most grant support was given to nonprofit organizations. Denise Pate, who manages Oakland’s Cultural Funding Program, one of the few places where INDIVIDUALS can find support for their work, is part of the growing movement of funders who are now recognizing the value of supporting individuals who are part of the creative sector. Denise is an experienced grant maker, grant strategist, and arts administrator, who will answer questions about the current trends in funding and provide some strategies for ensuring that your work scores high in the panel process.
Denise Pate is the Coordinator of the City of Oakland’s Cultural Funding Program, a program that awards over $1 million dollars to Oakland artists and organizations. She has spent over 30 years working in the arts and nonprofit sector, serving in many roles. Some of her past affiliations include World Arts West (producers of the SF Ethnic Dance Festival), California College of the Arts, Destiny Arts Center, and Youth in Arts. She is part of Grantmakers in the Arts’ Support for Individual Arts Committee, and a member of the Board of Trustees for Dance/USA. She received her B.A. in Movement Education, and an MBA. She has written features for IN DANCE, a local dance membership publication. But most importantly, she’s prepared the guidelines for many grant programs, and written MANY grant proposals.
