Castro Neighborhood Bakery Broken Into for the Sixth Time

A Castro neighborhood bakery was reportedly ransacked Monday evening. San Francisco police officers said they responded to reports of a robbery at Le Marais Bakery in the 400 block of Sanchez Street shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
Employees called the police after they noticed the front door was damaged and items like the sales counter’s iPads and employee gifts were stolen, said officers. Owners said the burglars took “everything,” including the bakery’s industrial safe from the basement. This is reportedly the sixth time the bakery has experienced a break-in, the most recent being about a month ago, according to KPIX.
“It happens over and over and nothing changes,” wrote owner Patrick Ascaso on the bakery’s social media pages. Ascaso called on local leaders like Mayor London Breed, Gov. Gavin Newsom and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to better protect San Francisco’s family-owned businesses. “Please, San Francisco and California leaders, do more to care for our city and its small businesses. We deserve better. Our communities deserve better,” wrote Ascaso.
San Francisco Supervisor Ahsha Safai echoed the need for San Francisco to protect its local shopowners. “We need to support Le Marais Bakery and help them [recover]– no better time than this week,” he wrote on Twitter. “We also need to do better protecting our small businesses from these crimes.”
