This 92 mile portion of the route features Morgan Territory Rd., which will be one of the more spectacular roads the race has ever used. The race will also return to Patterson Pass Rd and the infamous wall before returning to Livermore for the first sprint of the day.
The route to Mt. Diablo from Livermore is the same that was used in 2012, where a portion of the climb was along the Stage 3 route. The crowds on Mt. Diablo were among the largest ever seen along a mountain route for the race. In 2013, the race will add an additional five miles of climbing to the actual summit. Mt. Diablo has the greatest viewscape of any mountain in California. On a clear day, you can see nearly 200 miles in any direction.
For Mt Diablo access, the roads will open at 8:00am and close at 2:00pm. The earlier you get there, the better chance you have of finding a parking spot. Parking is VERY limited. The preferred modes of transportation are your feet or a bicycle
Stage 7 – Livermore to Mt. Diablo – Saturday, May 18, 2013
- Starts at 11:35 am on S. Livermore Ave and Portola Ave., Livermore, CA
- Ends at 3:48 pm (approx.) at Mt. Diablo Summit
Lifestyle Festival Hours: 10 am–4:30 pm – located at the start
Best Places to Watch the Race | Stage 7
- Livermore (race start). You will have opportunities to get autographs, take pictures, and talk to the riders. Livermore will also have big screen TVs to watch the live coverage of the race. As a bonus, not only will the race return through Livermore for a Sprint, the Lifestyle Festival will also be located in Livermore.
- Morgan Territory Rd. The vistas from Morgan Territory Rd are breath taking. On the other hand, this road is very narrow with limited parking. Suggest that you scout out a parking spot a few days before the race and head out there early on race day.
- Patterson Pass Rd (The Wall). Recognized as one of the most iconic climbs in the history of the Amgen Tour of California. This short and steep climb is a great place to watch the race, but parking is almost non-existent. Watch the start in Livermore and then enjoy the 9.1-mile ride to the KOM.
- Mt Diablo State Park. North Gate Rd: The race route will not use North Gate Rd. South Gate Rd before the Ranger kiosk: For people walking or cycling to Mt Diablo, this is great place to watch the race. Not only will you have a short hike or ride; you will also have the quickest access out of the park. Lots of switchbacks and great photo ops. Remember, there is no parking here. South Gate Rd between the Ranger kiosk and Summit Rd: This is the flattest section of the climb to the finish. There is limited parking on this section of South Gate Rd, but it is a good departure point for those walking or riding to the finish. Summit Rd: While there is no vehicle access, this is where we expect to see the bulk of the spectators. The further you go on Summit Rd, the steeper it gets and the longer you must wait before heading back down the mountain. The final 500m of the route will be fenced on both sides of the road.– Road Closures: Vehicle access to Mt Diablo will close at 2:00pm (or earlier depending on available parking). Local residents off of Mt Scenic Hwy will have continued access. Law enforcement will be checking IDs. The actual race route coming through Danville will close just ahead of the race.
– Riding or walking to Mt Diablo – There are no restrictions getting to North Gate Rd.
– Blackhawk Rd is the only way to get to Mt Diablo Scenic Hwy (which turns into South Gate Rd). There is a sidewalk that runs the entire length of Blackhawk Rd. from Camino Tassajara to Mt Diablo Scenic Hwy. Access via Diablo Rd (which becomes Blackhawk Rd) is restricted to cyclists only. Because several sections of Blackhawk Rd have no shoulders and no place to walk, pedestrians are prohibited. There will be several warning signs along Green Valley Rd, Diablo Rd, and Blackhawk Rd. Law enforcement will be in place and will turn pedestrians away. There are no shortcuts or side streets to get past these sections of Blackhawk Rd.
