"Phantom of the Paradise" | Underground Film Night: Obscure Super 8 & 16mm Movies | BerkeleyIn Phantom of the Paradise, a disfigured composer sells his soul for the woman he loves, so that she will perform his music. However, an evil record tycoon betrays him and steals his music to open his rock palace.
The story is a loosely adapted mixture of The Phantom of the Opera, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Faust. Initially, it was a box office failure and was panned by some critics, but has since acquired a cult following. Its music was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award in 1974.
